Home Studio Soundproofing

Okay, so you finally decided to build a home studio for your band, your kid's band or simply to have a music studio type room in your house. Whatever your reasons are for building a home studio, one of the things you need to focus on is the home studio soundproofing you need to do. You wouldn't want your neighbors knocking on your door to ask you to tone down the noise in the middle of a practice session nor would you want the cops coming over and telling you that complaints are coming in for your disturbing the peace. Here are some ways for you to insulate and soundproof a room in your house.

What Kind Of Studio Are You Making?

Before you start sticking insulation and acoustic boards all over your garage walls or your basement floors, you will need to determine first what kind of a studio you are planning on making. The kind of studio you want to build will have a bearing on the kind of material you may need to use as well as how you lay down these soundproofing materials. You may need to ask yourself, will this studio be used for simple practice sessions or will recording sessions be held in it? Are the instruments being used going to be plugged into power amplifiers or will they be simple acoustic instruments? Will your drums be plugged into mics that run to a mixer that is then connected to speakers? Are you using acoustic drums or are you using digital ones? All of these are considerations you have to take into account when planning on creating a home studio.

Starting Your Home Studio Soundproofing

Home studio soundproofing for a garage or basement studio that is to be used for full band practice with amplifiers and with plans for recording requires that maximum soundproofing be done. This means that you will need to create the double walls that effectively muffle the noise that comes from within the room. Before you lay down the insulation and acoustic boards that are used to bounce the sound back into the room, you will need to put together the wall frames that will be the inner walls of your home studio. While you can do this wall frame project yourself, if you are handy with a tape measure, hammer and nails, there are some people who try and get professional help for this stage of the soundproofing project. You will need to hammer together the wall frame inside the room on the floor and stand it up to fit the wall it is to cover. The ceilings also need to have the same kind of double walling if you are to create a true live recording studio and totally soundproofed room, however if your room is way too small for this endeavor, the ceiling double walling may be skipped. Once the double walling frames are up, you have the choice of placing sound proofing mats in between both walls to further muffle the sounds that will be made in this room. Insulation can also be used within these walls to further aid in keeping the noise from reaching your neighbors' homes.

Finishing Your Home Studio Soundproofing Project

The final step in your home studio soundproofing project may be the paint you will use on these walls but before that, you will need to install walls first and then install soundproofing acoustic panels over these walls. You may also need to install a soundproof door to finish this room off.
