Soundproofing An Apartment
Why should a person soundproof their apartment? If you are someone who lives in an apartment that is located in a very busy part of town or if you have rather hyper-active neighbors who could care less about the noise that they make, soundproofing an apartment is more than just a good idea, it is a necessity. For your peace of mind as well as peace in your abode, installing soundproofing materials to the walls, ceilings and floors of your apartment is indeed something you should consider doing. These soundproofing materials can be very useful for those who find it hard to sleep in noisy environments and while the sound of speeding cars outside your apartment window cannot be totally diffused, a soundproofed apartment can offer you more peace and quiet than one that is not soundproofed.
Soundproofing Your Walls
How you can keep the noise from the outside world as well as the noise from next door from coming into your home can be done by soundproofing your apartment. You will first need to soundproof your walls and this can be done in a few ways. You can start by creating a double wall with the use of a drywall placed over the original walls of your apartment. You may need to ask the building owner or your landlord for permission to do this if you are renting. This drywall can then be covered with plywood and then with a soundproof sheetrock like those that are sometimes used in professional recording studios. Another way that you can use to soundproof your walls is to use a vinyl barrier within the drywall. Some people just add furring strips over an existing wall and place the vinyl barrier over it or an industrial foam composite that is built to stop the transmission of sound. Other people find this kind of soundproofing totally unattractive and opt for a drywall that holds this kind of a soundproofing combination behind it.
Soundproofing Your Ceilings For those people who live in an apartment that has a drop ceiling, installing soundproofing material for the ceiling is easy. You will simply need the same kind of cloth-like vinyl barrier that you use for your walls. You will need to place this vinyl barrier on top of your ceiling grid. This can dampen the noise that may come from above you. To further enhance the noise canceling powers of the vinyl you placed in your ceiling grid, you can add acoustical ceiling tiles to the plan. You can use these to replace the ceiling tiles that you have above you or you can glue these to your ceiling if you are not fortunate enough to have a drop ceiling. For optimum soundproofing of your apartment's ceiling, you can add a foam composite to this equation. Soundproofing Your Floors After your walls and your ceilings, the next step in soundproofing an apartment is to soundproof your floors. One of the simplest ways to muffle sound from below is to place rugs over your carpeted floor. Of course, for maximum soundproofing, you can also use a vinyl foam composite to further muffle the sounds from below. Simply remove the carpet you have in your apartment followed by the removal of the carpet pads underneath it. Lay down the vinyl foam composite that you have over the raw floor and replace the carpet padding as well as the carpet over it. You now have a soundproof floor.
